Wine from the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius!
Layered aromas of apricot, bourbon vanilla bean and warm spices. This truly Italian white is completely bone dry, rich and defined. Assertive with ample tannins give structure to the body, soft salinity gives shape and elegance. It’s a wine which would call an inattentive drinker to attention and which rewards an attentive drinker with a satisfaction that is hard to come by.
In short, this is one of the most accomplished southern Italian wines that I’ve tasted recently; it reflects the warm climate and the volcanic soils, and possesses an umami character that pleases all the senses.
Organic.
Italy, Campania: 90% Caprettone (possibly Trebbiano d’Abruzzo), 10% Falanghina
12.5% ABV, 750 mL
Co-fermented grapes in stainless steel tanks under 22°. 48 hours of skin maceration. Élevage of 12 months in stainless steel vats on its lees and one year in the bottle. Under 10 mg/L SO2 added only at fermentation.
Since the 1700’s, the Matrone family has been cultivating vineyards on the southern slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Fast forward to this century, when Andrea Matrone and his cousin Francesco reappropriated their family’s original cantina and historic vineyard holdings that climb up the volcano. In fact, Strada Matrone is still today the main path to the crater. Andrea’s experience as a local agronomist and enologist, combined with his contadino ethos, give wines of volcanic energy and radiating minerality.
